WARM WINTER ITEMS FOR LOCAL FAMILIES

Coats for the Community helps ensure Hubbard County families are prepared for Minnesota winters. In its first year serving Hubbard County, more than 1,000 winter items, including coats, hats, gloves, and other cold-weather gear, were distributed to children and adults.

This annual program is made possible through a community-wide drive to collect winter items. Thank you to Citizens National Bank, De La Hunt Media, Enjoy, and St. Peter’s Catholic Church, along with generous local donors and volunteers, for helping make this event possible. More details about the 2026 Coats for the Community event are coming soon.

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES, PROTECTING CHILDREN

United Way supports child abuse prevention efforts in Hubbard County by providing grant funding to local organizations working directly with children and families. These grants are made possible through funds raised during the annual Radiothon to End Child Abuse, a community-driven fundraiser that brings together local donors and partners to support programs that help prevent child abuse and strengthen families.

In 2025, Radiothon funding supported Support Within Reach, Youth Emergency Shelter & Supports, and Kinship of the Park Rapids Area, local organizations working to prevent child abuse and strengthen families in Hubbard County. Together, these partners are helping ensure children have the support and protection they need to thrive.

BRINGING HOLIDAY JOY TO LAPORTE FAMILIES

Holiday Gifts for Kids helps ensure Laporte children and families experience the joy and comfort of the holiday season. Through this program 45 children in December 2025 received a holiday gift and a family game to enjoy together.

This annual program is made possible through community generosity and support. Thank you to Trinity Lutheran Church - Laporte and generous donors and volunteers for helping make the holidays brighter for children and families across the Laporte area.

BUILDING A LOVE OF READING

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, 160 children ages 0–5 in Hubbard County receive a free book every month, helping build early literacy skills and a love of reading from the very start. Research shows that children who grow up with books in the home are more likely to develop the early language and reading skills they need to succeed in school.

United Way helps fund the cost of bringing this program to Hubbard County, about $30 per child each year, ensuring families participate at no cost. Thanks to the generosity of the Hewitt Family Charitable Fund, Itasca-Mantrap Operation Round Up, and other local donors, we were able to enroll every child on the waitlist, ensuring more young children in Hubbard County can now receive a new book in the mail each month.

COMMUNITY HEROES SUPPORTING LOCAL KIDS

Shop With a Hero helps make the holiday season brighter for local children and families. In 2025, 84 children were paired with community heroes for a Christmas shopping experience, helping families receive holiday support and creating meaningful memories for kids.

This program is hosted by Hubbard County Human Services and Walmart and made possible through the support of community partners and volunteers. United Way is proud to partner in this effort, using grant funds to help provide holiday food boxes for each participating child, coordinating volunteers and day of help, and writing grants to ensure children and families in our community have a joyful holiday season.
