Venture Grants focused on Income (Financial Stability)

The Bemidji Community Food Shelf was awarded a Venture Grant in the amount of $2,500 for their Proxy Assistance program.  The program will provide emergency food boxes for seniors over age 65, who are not able to come to the food shelf because of some physical limitation.  Over the course of a year, the Venture Grant will provide 550 emergency food boxes to seniors in need.  The food boxes can be requested “by proxy” and delivered through pastors or another church member to area churches or taken to the Senior Center for seniors to pick up.

Northwoods Habitat for Humanity was awarded a Venture Grant in the amount of $1,375 for their A Brush with Kindness program.  A Brush with Kindness is a Habitat for Humanity International program that focuses on exterior home maintenance for low income homeowners (earnings below 30% of county median income).  Material for the projects is charged to the homeowner and repaid with a 0% interest loan over a 2-5 year term (unsecured loans).  Labor for the projects is not charged to the homeowner since Habitat engages volunteers for the projects.  The program helps lower income homeowners maintain financial stability and self-sufficiency by offering affordable options for home maintenance and repairs.
